Re: Sir Charles speaks -- as usual

Absolutely, hanging with Chuckie would be a blast. I understand the press
interest in him. The press reminds me of a rotweiller, if you run out of food
it'll eat you. The press will give him enough rope and that will be the last
of Chuckie.

I think he gets the press he gets because he is an outrageous
character; he comes up with more good quotes in a week than most athletes do
in a month. Of course, the quotes may or may not bear any resemblance to the
truth. The comments about the Masters were ridiculous, as lengthening the
course helps Tiger Woods more than anyone else. He also gets press because,
from what I read, he enjoyed the press when he was playing and the reporters
enjoyed him. He was one of the few players who would hang out with the
reporters in the bars after games instead of retreating to the hotels or clubs
with a posse. And seldom could a reporter buy a drink when Charles was
around. THAT will get you plenty of good press!
Ironically, I am now listening to a book on tape called The Image,
written by Daniel Boorstin, former Librarian of Congress and historian
extraordinaire. In this book, written c. 1962, he coined the phrase
"pseudo-event." Charles Barkely news is a series of pseudo-events.
C'mon, Dan, wouldn't you like to hang out with Chuck, have a few beers and
watch a Celtics game on TV?
