Thoughts on Laker win

Today I had to endure the hoopla surrounding the gathering of close to a
million angelenos celebrating the Laker win. While I am glum about the win,
one of the reasons I like sports is because we get to see young (generally)
people who have, at an early age, attained the highest possible level in
their chosen profession. Seeing the smiles on Shaq, Kobe and the rest can
only make you feel their joy, which they deserve. It also makes you feel the
crushing disappointment for Sacramento, which came about as close as you can
come, and yet "failed."
The papers here have been full of comparisons to other "dynasties."
This is why I felt bummed. We Celtic fans may not like it, but the Lakers
now have 14 titles going back to Minneapolis days, only two less than the
Celtics. Jackson has nine rings, tying Red. There is plenty of reason to
think that this Laker team is capable of 2 or 3 more titles and maybe 5 or 6,
so the record of 8 straight is foreseeably in jeopardy. (And how many of you
think that the Bulls wouldn't have won 8 straight had Jordan not taken his
sabbatical?)
So the Cs had a fine year, but, whether we like it or not, their reign
as the all-time NBA franchise is in big trouble. If Shaq and Kobe stay
healthy...
   Oh well, it's Friday.
