The "internals' question
I think I've figured out the "internals'" question. It all revolves around
money, whose going to play point guard and little more about talent.
We can make the Baker trade just with Williams and Kenny. This would allow us
to save a little money to go to Rogers. I don't have this year's salary
numbers but I know Vin will make 12.4 million this year. At the 15% trade
limit, that would be 1.8 million saved. Add 1.8 million to the 1 to 1.4
million already offered Rogers and maybe we got a deal.
If we add Vitally to the mix, we have to take back a salary from Seattle. S.
Williams fits but I don't think that leaves us that much money left to resign
Rogers. Dobanjak, who makes 4 times less than S. Williams works so I think
they just sign some guy off the street to make work a Baker for a Vitally and
Kenny deal.
If you aren't interested in signing Rogers, then you take Shammond Williams
to help shore up the point guard spot. I'm not sure if he is ready for
primetime point guard duties. Remember in the playoffs that the Nets put the
press on us and Delk fell apart and they even unnerved Walker. They had to
bring in Strickland who fortunately for us rediscovered his shot. I don't
know Damon Jones fits into this equation.
Another possilble factor is whether or not we throw in Forte. A Vin plus
Shammond for Vitally/Kenny will work with or without Forte. If you dump him,
you do have chance of saving his salary since Shammond is a free agent at the
end of the year. Again, that money could go forward to a Rogers signing.
So I guess they have to figure out how much Forte is worth.
Peter May says we are at 53 million just with the seven main players ( not
including Forte). Add 3 million for Rogers and a Sundov and Bremmer and we
are at 57-58 million. Add two no. 1 picks are we at 60 million. It's ok by
me, especially since I think this team would be going to the Finals, even
with some point guard concerns. I also think we would be loaded for the
future. However, the Chaos Theory says "If something can go wrong, it will".
Therefore, someone will break a leg or die and we will be wrapped around the
axle with salarys forever. However, that is a risk I am willing to take.
Therefore, I say include Forte plus ask for a no. 1 back in return.
That may not be easily done considering on how well Seattle has drafted in
the recent past. Look at these guys who they have drafted and/or developed
just in the last couple of years: Jerome James, Rashard Lewis, Radman, Earl
Watson, Shammond Williams, Mason and Double O who just signed with the Magic.
All of these guys other than Radman were guys that the Sonics discovered on
their own with late picks or pickups. (The key here maybe is that they played
them)....
