New owners - decisions by committee?
<< This is not a good sign. They (our new owners) need to find a
Bird, or Donnie Walsh type and just turn the basketball decisions
over to them. >> - JBMetz
For sure, decisions by committee can be scary. But I think we
are jumping the gun a bit here when it comes to our beloved
Celts. So please, a little calm in the courtroom.
Keep in mind that our two principals - Wyc and Steve - have
been enthusiastic season ticket holders and apparently on the
same bball wave for years. Also they will be the ONLY two
owners with full operating control. Wyc's dad along with the
fourth principal (The Abbey Group - local real estate
developers) were brought in with the understanding that they
were to simply solidify the balance sheet and be allowed to
sit directly behind Kedrick on the bench at home games
sporting large plastic "I am an owner " name tags
Wyc Sr. will surely ditto his son and Steve's ideas, while the
Abbey Group will threaten Fleet Center landlord Jeremy Jacobs
by serving as a decoy in planning for yet another new Celt home
come 2011 when the team's present Fleet Center lease expires.
After all, as cushiony as our present Fleet Center lease is, the
loss of revenue from all those beers and dawgs cannot be
overlooked concerning our 12-man roster's bottom line.
If so many feel that "decisions by committee " are dysfunctional
(juries vs. a judge?), then the principals must also recognize
this. And don't you think said new consortium will employ
a GM - hopefully not Wallace but one who they are in sync with,
have confidence in, and are likely to honor his/her decisions?
Maybe they will be clever enough to name either Tammo or
Jackie McMullen to the position. But whoever they name, the
GM's decisions will likely need rubber-stamping only from
Wyc and Steve, not from the cast of thousands some are now
envisioning.
As for the six-man executive committee which sounds so
unwieldy, it is structured to include the above four principals
plus two more masthead-only, sorely-needed, bulging-walleted,
egotistically-driven "I own the Celtics " investors.
But wait - if the above silky smooth plan should fail, Wyc
and Steve might well be forced to turn instead to hundreds of
smaller investors. Hell, they might even be forced to tap you
and me, JB, and Berry (you've got it, Mark, so why not flaunt it),
and Snoop and DanForant, and Tammo and Joe H., and Cecil and
JHill, and odds-on favorites Lappy and RickDHome - sheeeet man -
even Lance and Leo "The Eye " Papile, for $100 contributions.
A sacrifice collectively made to the devil's leaving? Admittedly
said contribution to our team would be a shocking first for Leo.
But under the circumstances of you being the highfalutin OWNER
of a world-class Celt board, JB, your expected contribution might
well be placed in the area of $102. Ya never know.
