Anderson arrives at camp in great shap
by Shira Springer/Boston Globe

After just a few days of training camp, it's hard to know what gave the
Celtics reason for optimism about the upcoming season. Was it the fact
that all the players worked out diligently over the summer and came into
camp prepared? Was it the fact that Kenny Anderson arrived in the best
shape of his career?

Anderson came with a markedly changed body and new mindset. In an about
face from years past, he doesn't want to be taken out of drills or
scrimmages in practices. He wants to push himself to the limit in training
camp, so he'll be well prepared for the regular season.

CAMP BATTLE
The competition for playing time at point guard appeared to be more of a
battle when the 2000-01 regular season ended, then when training camp
started.

At the end of last season, there were many questions about Anderson and
his ability to still compete at the NBA level. With a fractured jaw and
sprained ankle, Anderson had suffered through an injury-riddled year and
was never quite himself on the court.

Meanwhile, Milt Palacio arrived in December and gained valuable experience
as injuries continued to befall the Celtics' point guards last
season. Palacio returned for summer league play in amazing condition, and
it was thought he might even contend for the starting position and
certainly garner a lot of minutes. He was seen as a young, hungry point
guard in contrast to the older, and less durable veterans Randy Brown and
Anderson.

But since Anderson arrived at training camp in impressive shape, there's
been no question who will start at point guard and who will earn the
majority of the minutes at the position. O'Brien has a lot of faith in
Anderson and has really liked what he has seen so far in practice.
