RE: [Celtic_Pride] Kedrick Brown

Interesting thoughts. To answer your question,
I think that in terms of pure basketball skills,
SAR is a better player than Antoine, but doesn't
come near to measuring up in the heart or leadership
dept. SAR is another quiet craftsman, like Bobby Jones
or Alex English. Not that there's anything wrong with
that! But you need more than just skill to raise up
your teammates. Antoine, with all his screaming and
preening, does do just that.

Last night the 1991 and 92 draft was on nba.com tv, and
it really was striking. So many guys are gone from the
league entirely, and so many others were such disappointments.
To hear Doug Collins and Hubie Brown praise a Brad Sellers or
Mark Macon, and to reflect on what kind of careers they had,
is sobering indeed. But not so sobering that I won't be carrying
on like a man in the last stages of an ether binge if we get
somebody good. Or weeping like the guy getting shot by the
Saigon police chief if we end up with lousy picks.

In your opinion, who is a better player, Abdur-Raheem or Walker? I may
have been tempted to pull the trigger from Boston's point of view. What
might prevent me is all these reports that this is the first off season
where Walker is working out daily so that is intriguing although that
may not improve his decision making which is vital if he will be playing
20min/game at the point. I've said before, hard to comment on Brown w/o
him working out. I'd take Diop with one of the picks and would be happy
with Johnson or Battier at the other. I'd be doing cartwheels of
Richardson or Griffin fell to us but I give the chances of that
happening a big fat goose egg. In fact, there is a better chance of
Gasol falling to us than Griffin or Richardson. Another guy that could
slide if he gets by Chicago is Chandler. I think I'd rather have Diop
than Chandler myself. Diop is a true Center in every sense of the word,
Chandler could be more a Ralph Sampson type who I was never crazy about.
I'd rather have Loren Woods than Chandler. The crazy thing is that I
remember quite a few high school phenoms that never even made the nba.
Does anyone remember Marcus Liberty that attended Illinois for two
years? He made the cover of SI as a freshman and he was 6'9'' and he
could handle the rock, hit the outside shot and he was the next Magic
Johnson. Well, Detroit drafts him in the 2nd round after two mediocre
seasons at UofI and he is gone after 3-4 years as an end of the bench
player. Now since these highschoolers will be getting guaranteed money,
these teams will be giving them five years to prove themselves. Unless
they have that drive like Garnett,Kobe and McGrady, one or two of these
guys will end up being busts. I like Diops background coming from a
foreign country where work ethic tends to be much stronger and you take
very little for granted. These guys in the state like Curry,Brown and
Chandler have been tended to hand and foot since the 8th grade and they
might be hungry to make the sports center highlights but I want a guy on
the Celtics that is Larry Bird hungry - will shoot 100 free throws after
practice so he can be one of the 90% guys in the league. Hopefully,
Walker is getting some of that this year (he'll never ever match Larry's
ethic as few ever will) and we will see the results this year. So give
me Diop, Johnson and Cook (I guess, I'm rather indifferent at #21 - I'd
love to see Jefferson fall there but he'll be gone). I'm not sure about
this Parker kid either.

The interesting thing about today's news is the apparent certainty that
Diop
isn't going to Boston. It's sounding a lot more like
Murphy/Johnson/Radmanovic/Battier and Kedrick Brown. Of course, if Brown
goes in the top nine, and Diop/Murphy or Radmanovic sneak into the top
nine,
then things really get interesting. Perusing the mock drafts and rumors
and
everything, it also is no lock that the Celts would take Battier if he
fell
to them. I'm not so sure they don't like Kedrick Brown more, and let's
face
it... how many small forwards does one team need? I don't know how to
feel
about the Diop stuff. I know he's scary, but the potential seems too
good to
pass up when you have two other picks. I'm hoping there's a little
action in
trading up at the last minute. I'd love Gasol, but we'd have to get to 2
to
get him. Griffin could be there at 6 or 7, and he'd be a nice pickup. I
don't know what to think.

By the way-great trade for Atlanta. They add a proven star who probably
compares favorably to who they would have gotten at 3. Vancouver gave up
a
lot, but if you see the guy you want, you go get him. That's what I wish
the
Celtics would have done. They probably could have had 3 (Gasol), Lo
Wright
and Brevin Knight for Walker, and kept the 10 and 11 picks. You have to
admit that's tempting.

There's a lot of great mock drafts out there,
and nearly all of them show us as having the
chance to draft either Diop or Johnson, or
maybe somebody better. I don't think we will
take Troy Murphy in that scenario. As for Brown,
he may well be all that, in which case we should
keep him. Interestingly, he's now said (as of
late yesterday) to have gotten promised a place
in the top 9! Which of course means another slider
coming our way. at 21, I don't believe the Celtics
are so love with Tony Parker that they would pass up
Joe Forte if he were available. Red is supposedly
very high on him as well, and they like to throw him a bone
when they can.

By all accounts it looks like the Celtics will select Brown (read Katz
6/26 article about Promises). Apparently, he has been guaranteed to be
selected in the lottery. So either we keep him or trade him to the
Blazers. It sounds like Gasol will be gone as well so the #10 may end
up being Johnson, Battier or Diop. Here's my #1-11 based on everything
I've read.

#1 Brown
#2 Curry
#3 Gasol (Vancouver)
#4 Griffin
#5 Chandler
#6 Richardson
#7 White
#8 Johnson
#9 Battier?
#10 Murphy
#11 Brown (either for us or as trade with Portland - can they take Kenny
Anderson's salary - that would almost be palatable)

My hope is that there is a wild card like Radmonovic or someone else so
that someone in slots 1-9 slide to us. I think Battier would be great
especially if Boston uses the zone which Battier's defensive skills will
be more apparent and he can hit the 3 ball another prerequisite for all
non-center draft picks. I like Murphy too. Can't even comment on
Kedrick since they are shielding him and no one has really seen him
play. Could he be the next Scottie Pippen (i.e. lottery pick that you
never heard of but did he make a name for himself)? I think Diop is the
slider here so I think we'll have a shot at him unless he gets picked
before us, in which case I'd be happy with any other slider.

The one variable is trades - there could be quite a few trades.

Any feedback. Anyone else care to predict the top 11?
