The Herald is burying the Globe on Celtics coverage
once again. Where's Jerry Springer's daughter?
As you read below, you'll see that the C's, like a lot of teams,
are intrigued by Rad's shooting prowess and
athleticism. And surprise, surprise, Gasol is staying in the
draft.....

Foreign intrigue for Celts
by Steve Bulpett
Saturday, June 9, 2001

CHICAGO - The Celtics have added another foreign ingredient to their
recipe for the 10th and 11th picks in the June 27 NBA draft. While there
was new word yesterday that Pau Gasol is more likely to stay in the
draft, 6-foot-10 Yugoslavian Vladimir Radmanovic has captured a number
of imaginations at the pre-draft camp.

Radmanovic was added to a private workout designed to showcase Alabama
freshman forward Gerald Wallace and Stanford center Jason Collins. But
by most accounts, Radmanovic was the baddest, displaying a slick jumper
and very good athleticism.

``He shoots the ball, and in the case of most of those Euro shooters,
they give away a lot on the other side of the gridiron, as they say,''
reported Celtics personnel director Leo Papile, who missed this latest
session (GM Chris Wallace was on the job) but has seen him prior. ``But
this guy doesn't really have to, physically and athletically. That
obviously makes him more intriguing.

``He's hit the country sort of like the Beatles did in 1964, real quick
and fast. Everybody all of sudden is getting excited about him. I'm not
saying he'll go ahead of us, but there'll be action for him ahead of us.
People will bring him in and take a long look.''

The reason Radmanovic has come onto the radar screen so late is that,
according to Papile, ``he got tied up with some contract (expletive)
this year and he ended up on another team for a short while. He didn't
have the long look that other guys might have had. It's almost like a
guy in Division 1 who transfers colleges and has to sit out. He ended up
playing late. But he's a real deal.''

Radmanovic will be in Waltham to audition for the Celts this week.

``I'm interested to see what he can do and how he checks out
physically,'' Wallace said. ``There's no question he's skilled.''

As for Gasol, the 7-foot scorer from Spain, the word from league people
now is that he'll play in the NBA this season if he goes in the top five
(the extra money will help him deal with buying out the last year of his
contract) and that he'll remain in the draft if he's certain to be taken
in the top 10. In the latter case, Gasol may go back to Spain and finish
his deal before hooking up with the team that drafts him.

Some of the others expected to get a look from the Celtics this week:
Villanova (and Burncoat High) forward Michael Bradley, USC forward Brian
Scalabrine, UCLA guard Earl Watson, Cincinnati guard Kenny Satterfield,
Auburn guard Jamison Brewer, Iowa State guard Jamaal Tinsley, Arizona
guard Gilbert Arenas, USC guard Jeff Trepagnier, Arkansas swingman Joe
Johnson, Arizona forward Richard Jefferson and French guard Tony Parker.
Locals Monty Mack (UMass), Kenny Harley (BC) and Jonathan Beerbohm (BC)
will also get looks.
