Listen to yourself: "all you have to do" is hit a game-winning "miracle"
shot? How many guys do that? Though the contract seems somewhat high,
the Celts needed to lock up a point guard who had proven that he could run
the team, start if he needed to, and hit the open shot. Mega Milt did
that (well, at least the first two), and, if he can improve his game, what
do the numbers actually matter, if the team is already over the cap and
his contract doesn't push them over into luxury tax land? I really don't
care at all -- what I looked at was the _length_ of the contract: two
years is nothing. If Milt doesn't improve, or we find someone better, he'
s not a long-termer siphoning money and taking up valuable bench space.
If he _does_ improve, his next contract will be even bigger.
The real problem with NBA contracts isn't the amount of money, which many
people seem fixated on (hey, it's simple supply-and-demand -- players get
paid what teams are willing to pay) but the fact that they are guaranteed,
so that teams can't regain the contract money if a player becomes a
liability.
Looks like someone in the organization agrees closely with Tommy Gun's
assessment of Milt., as far as his potential and how he fits in with the
other players. Myself, I'm looking forward to seeing the Miracle Man (and
the rooks!) in action tomorrow. Who knew there would be a Celtic fix
coming my way in the summer? Work? Who needs it -- there's a C's game on.
