Re: Pierce released!

I have to admit, Joe, that I feel more of a connection to Pierce now than I
have toward any Celtic in a long time. Of course I rooted for them
consistently, but as a longtime fan, I just didn't have the same strong
feelings toward these guys that I had toward some of the stars of the past.
Why did it take this attack to make me feel something stronger? I guess it
humanized him for me, and then his determination to return to the team
certainly thrilled me.

Do I now think the best thing for the team is to keep Pierce, rather than
trade him as I've lobbied for before? No. I still think the best way for the
Celts to turn this thing around is to deal Pierce (when his value is
high--not a day after leaving the hospital, of course). But if he ever is
traded, it will bother me and I'll be sorry to see him go. For some
illogical reason, I now feel like Paul Pierce is a Celtic, not just a good
player who plays in Boston.

P.S. Am I the only one anxiously awaiting some "official" word on when
Pierce will be able to practice? We're suddenly hearing he may be there
opening night, but I sure would like to hear that out of Pierce, Pitino or a
doctor. I know the team can't comment until Pierce does, or at least until
he reports to training camp, but can't Pierce and his doctor issue a
statement or something?
