Re: The List

Greg,

It is interesting that you have replied to this email and defended yourself
on each count. I certainly was referring to you on a few counts, but
nowhere near all of them. I don't think that calling someone 'thin-skinned'
is an insult - but you've certainly proved to me that you are thin-skinned
by defending yourself against things that did not refer to you. You did
notice that I didn't name any names, right? It's not an insult if it's the
truth, right?

There are plenty of other list members who sometimes will fall into the same
trap of thinking their opinion is correct because they are a 'true fan'.
Let me tell you, true fans can be as wrong as anyone else. I once thought
that Eric Montross was a can't miss NBA center, yet I still consider myself
a true fan.

You may feel that others need your help ratting out the fake fans, but it is
usually pretty obvious who the fakes are. When you accuse list members who
routinely contribute useful opinions and information of being fakes, it
rings hollow.

As far as the off-list email issue goes, I don't think much of it. My
feeling is that if you have something to say to someone, have the guts to
say it publicly. Since you are replying to public list postings, why do you
post the threats privately? This is a public, not private, forum. Yes, I
realize you also do say some threatening things on-list, but it appears that
you save your best stuff for private emails. Yes, it is free speech, but
that doesn't mean I have to be impressed. Do you feel the need to hide the
fact that you are threatening someone on the side?

FWIW, if you are wondering how well I know you and everyone else, I have
been lurking (see I can insult myself) on the list for 3-4 years,
occasionally contributing when I can. Living far from Boston, I have a
limited ability to see games and contribute meaningfully to the list. I
post when I see something I can contribute, though. You can burn me all you
want for not being a useful list member, it won't bother me one bit. If you
and others want to form a new list for only approved members only, go ahead.
It's a mostly free country. You will be missed (and I do mean that), but
life will go on. I do value your input on the list, agree with you more
often that not, and hope that you will stay, but I think we all could do
without the threats and the witch-hunts. Now let me slip back on my
rose-colored glasses - dang, they're all cracked up! Sorry to all for the
non-Celtic content. This'll be my last post on the subject, I'll let others
have the last word here.

Rob
