In Pierce's defense, much of the ref's lopsidedness in making calls
was directed at Pierce. Of course, Pierce and Walker take most of
the shots, so if they aren't affected, the team isn't affected.
Antoine overcame the lack of calls, but Pierce normally gets a lot
of points on free throws, and just wasn't getting the calls.
On 2 occasions, there were blatant non-calls. Pierce would fake and
lift his man, then go up with the shot and get clobbered by the
defender coming down. Yes, Pierce leaned in, but only very slightly,
and he got mauled both times. Guys like Reggie Miller will blatantly
lean in, and only get breathed on by the defender, and they'll get the
call. Pierce got neither call. Tommy Heinsohn nearly had a coronary
both times.
