When the NBA draft started last night, the Celtics had just
one pick.

But long after they had chosen UCLA power forward Jerome
Moiso in the first round,
Celtics coach Rick Pitino and general manager Chris Wallace
engineered an 11th-hour
exchange with the Seattle SuperSonics that netted Croatian
scoring star Josip Sesar.
The SuperSonics chose the 6-foot-6 guard with the 47th
overall pick in the second
round, then dealt him to the Celtics for a pair of
second-round draft picks next season.
The other second-round selection the Celtics used to
complete the deal came via the
                 Denver Nuggets.

``(Celtics assistant coach) Jim O'Brien and I went out to
Chicago to see him work out,''
said Wallace, who announced the deal. ``He's a tremendous
shooter.

``He's the best shooter of all the dozen-plus players we
had in here (for private
workouts). And he handles the ball very well.''

As for Sesar's defensive skills, Wallace provided some
comic relief.

``His defense is like all Europeans,'' said Wallace.

``He'll have an adjustment with a capital A.''

In four seasons in the Croatian Pro League, Sesar averaged
20.4 points per game. His
scoring average dipped to 16 points per game last season as
he logged some minutes at
                 point guard.

He averaged three assists per game. Sesar's career 3-point
shooting mark is 40 percent.

A member of the Croatian national squad, he helped lead the
organization to the
                 European championship in 1997.

The Celtics were without their own second-round pick (No.
39 overall) as a result of the
Chris Mills deal they engineered with the New York Knicks
three years ago.

New York had until next year to take the pick.
