I couldn't agree more. This list has lots of very knowledgeable fans.
(I do not put myself in that category.) But I doubt that more than two or
three of them have much a a grasp on the bargaining agreement in all its
detail, not to mention the personalities and politics of the NBA. I am
reminded of Jimmy Carter, a very bright and well-meaning man who came to
Washington with good ideas and benevolent visions. But he surrounded himself
with his Georgia staff members, who were totally out of their element in
Washington. The lack of ability to communicate effectively was one of many
things that crippled Carter's presidency. The Celtics must have someone who
knows the back alleys of the NBA, someone who can schmooze the Wests and
Embrys and Sterns of the league.
Finally, I note that Newton is another "legendary" figure. I've never
heard of the dude. "Legend" status comes awfully easy these days, doesn't
it? I'm surprised no one is talking about the "legendary" Steve Francis yet,
or the "legendary" Kenyon Martin. Somewhat snidely, maybe the "legendary
veteran all-star," Antoine Walker?
