Ball hog
Ron Mercer isn't planning a long stay in Orlando. The Magic acquired him
from Denver last week, but his agent has already started investigating
which teams would be willing to give Mercer the maximum $71 million
contract when he becomes a free agent after the season. But any team
interested in signing Mercer should take note of how happy most of his
ex-Denver teammates were when he left. Several Nuggets said the team
immediately improved without Mercer dominating the ball on offense.

Celtics' Mercer trade hasn't paid off
by Dave D'Alessandro

Observations, laments and miscellaneous fulminations:

-- Danny Fortson for Alvin Williams. Which means, essentially, that
Rick Pitino shipped out Ron Mercer for Eric Williams and Alvin. Ron
Mercer. For a tweener forward who is benched every third game and a
point guard who couldn’t pass to Vince Carter. A show of hands,
please, for those who regard this as progress.

Meanwhile, Charles Oakley will be delighted to welcome Fortson as his
heir apparent in Toronto, once he learns that Fortson has led the
league in personal fouls per minute over the last two years. Will the
Raps re-sign him? Maybe, maybe not. But they’ve probably acquired the
best piece they could use to finally acquire a starting point guard.
