RE: [Celtic_Pride] The Truth about Cats and Pitinos

Cecil, I understand what you're saying, but there are problems with your
argument.

Philly did add those players through trades, but they traded away some
valuable pieces. They traded Stackhouse for Ratliff and McKie. They traded
the right to draft Van Horn for Tim Thomas and others, and traded Thomas for
Ty Hill. They traded another young talent, Larry Hughes, for Toni Kukoc.
They had enough cap space to sign Geiger. Can the Celtics make similar
moves? Only if they trade Pierce or Walker. Don't you think Pierce and
Stackhouse are comparable assets? Plus, the Sixers have Iverson; the Celtics
don't. He's twice the player either of our "stars" are. So, sure, the team
can make trades, but the only really valuable tradeable assets are Walker
and Pierce. And you say you don't want to trade those guys.

I happen to believe you're valuing Walker and Pierce too highly (and so are
the Celtics), but let's assume you're right about them. It doesn't change
the fact that to make any kind of significant personnel change, at least one
of them is going to have to go. They're the only real bargaining chips the
team has.

Anyway, I'm driving the "blow it up" bus. Start over. I can't stand this
kind of basketball. It's everything that's wrong with the NBA.

OK. Over the past day or so, I have tried to point out how Philly has been
able to move to this level, but, with no offense intended toward Simon, I
don't know if he has received the messages.

Disgruntled C's fans have called for a complete overhaul of the team in its
present state and called for draft picks. I mentioned that Philly has
acquired the following players via free agency or trades:

Kukoc, Ratliff, Geiger, Lynch, Hill, Snow, Maxwell, McKie were all gotten
that way, to the credit of the GM and coach. They have assembled a fine
team to revolve around Iverson, but it was NOT done via the draft, other
than him.

So Philly was fortunate enough to be able to get decent players through
transactions, not through the draft. For those of us waiting to take our
team to the next level as a result of the draft will take several more
years, right? For example, Stith has already shown the benefits of that
deal IMHO. If Herren had not gotten injured, it would have (still does to
me) solidify that the deal was a steal for us. We are young enough as it
is. We need a couple of veterans who are capable of making key
contributions, unlike Walter. Preferably, one of them will be a big man.

Cecil
