That's not rare, it's raw.

Title: That's not rare, it's raw.

Last Thursday night in St. Louis, two of the top high school players in the country paired off in the KMOX Shootout. By one count, there were as many as 24 NBA teams represented (four GMs) for a firsthand look at Chicago monster Eddy Curry and Southern California phenom Tyson Chandler. That gives you some idea of where things are going, because it was a high school game, in December, in St. Louis. You might see a similar gathering in, say, Maui. Anyway, here's one report from an NBA set of eyes who wishes to remain anonymous because, as he put it, ''these kids are underclassmen with a capital U.'' Chandler was the better player on this night. ''Curry claimed he had the flu,'' the scout said, ''but I think it was a little problem with the scales. He looked a little heavy.'' Neither one dazzled. ''If this was your introduction to basketball, you might not ever come back,'' he said. The skinny is that both will be available for the draft. Curry already has committed to DePaul in what many see as a vanity signing. Chandler is uncommitted. One of the most impressive players in the shootout was Florida-bound David Lee, a 6-8 ath-a-lete who seems like he will step right into the Mike Miller role for Billy Donovan's Gators.
