RE: The Boston Celtics Mailing List Digest V7 #456

If we are going to trade for Mutombo, then do a three way with New York such

Atlanta gets Kenny Anderson, Utah #1, Walter McCarty, Chris Carr, and Jerome
Moiso or Tony Battie
New York get Mutombo
Boston gets Allan Houston, or Chris Childs, and Marcus Camby or Kurt Thomas

Hello all,

I know alot of folks like the guy, but I dont think they have seen him play
this year.
He looks terrible.

He is slow, awkward, clumsy and plodding.
Quite honestly he doesnt look like he belongs in the NBA.
Someone like Potapenko is such an athlete in comparison.

I suppose he can still block a few shots, but thats about it.
He certainly wouldnt help the celts become a fast break team.

I don't think we should give up one of our best players for him.
I know alot of writers are under this illusion that youth kills teams.
It doesnt though. Kobe isnt exactly old, and Duncan wasnt old when the
spurs won it.

We need to find a way to get a good young post player.
It must done either through trades, free agency, or the draft
or maybe some combination of all three.

I don't think the Celts need a center 7'4 or however tall that guy is.
All they need is a guy who can run, rebound and block some shots.
As far as an offense game goes..they don't even need that..just long as they
aren't a total clutz. A Theo Ratliff fits the bill.

And to be honest Battie is playing very well.

Its the point guard postion thats killing us. Herren wasn't playing well,
thats for
sure. It will be nice when Anderson comes back.

Pete

I wouldn't do this trade if the intention was to keep Mutombo. Maybe as
part of a three way trade. Mutombo brings zero offense. You would need to
bring in another scorer. That's two trades that need to be made. I'd
consider any other sceanaro that excluded Walker, Pierce though. It would
be interesting to see if this would take these two to the next level. It
might help Anderson's play as well.

I would think that maybe a Webber/Walker trade would work. But that said, I
think Walker is playing better this year for the most part.

I am not that impressed with most of the younger players right now that fit
cap wise in a Walker trade that their teams would be willing to trade
anyway.

Garnett, Kidd, Hill, maybe a package with Odem + someone, Duncan, Rose and a
few others would be an upgrade. Otherwise what is the point?

I expected a Walker/Brandt + Someone trade for a while. It may still happen
if Mercer is pushing for him.

Well he was pretty sick for awhile and he has one of the worst teams around
him. I think he'd look alot better on the Suns or Blazers or NY or Miami.

So, I can't find a website this year where season ticket holders are
selling their tickets. I have to believe that there is some serious
interest in selling tickets this year. Is everyone else using scalpers at
the Fleet Center or is there a new web site I don't know about?

Thanks,

Frank

Wow...super talent and monstrous stats! triple double night 21pts 12rbs
10blks...
He's averaging 23pts/game, 16rbs/game, 3blks/game for Seton Hall. This 6'9
PF freshman
is so good he might even jump on High Schooler phenom Eddi Curry as the no.
1 pick
in the coming draft.

I read in a bsktball mag (SLAM) that this guy will only go to college for a
year and then
jump to the NBA after it. He was suppossed to join the NBA draft last June
but decided in
last minute to joined Seton Hall to give more of an exhibition of his talent
and skills to
upgrade his draft position from mid-lottery to the top 2 or 3 picks...great
move.

Yeah, this guy is the real deal. I saw him play live when he came to
Clemson and he lit us up. He's 6'9, very long, quick with good range.
Reminds me of Kevin Garnett but not quite as athletic. This guy will be a
top 5 pick if he comes out, the most complete player in the nation as a
freshman.

Jason Williams from Duke has also been awesome. He reminds me of Stephon
Marbury or Baron Davis. He does it all, and seems to be more under control
this year. I would LOVE to get Jason Williams on the Celtics.

Shane Battier would be a nice addition who would do all the dirty work,
and from the looks of it would hit the open shot.

Brendan Haywood also had a triple double the other night. I would prefer
Loren Woods, but unless we win the draft we won't be in position to draft
Woods.

I saw Gerald Wallace from Alabama on TV the other day. very active, pure
athlete, maybe the best athlete I've ever seen. Very raw, but could be the
next Dominique.

It sucks that I'm looking forward to the draft, but even if we do make the
playoffs, we are still an impact player away, so why not look ahead?
The other players I'm following are Jamal Tinsley, Joe Forte, Joe Johnson
from Arkansas and Zach Randolph from Michigan State.
A great site for this is http://nbadraft.net

On a related note, what happened to the Denver Nuggets? I was hoping they
would finish between 6-10 in the draft to get us a really good player.
(Their pick is top 5 protected) But right now they are 10-8, beating Philly
and the Lakers along the way. They'll make the playoffs at this rate. I
hope they start losing soon.

Last I checked, both the Denver and Utah picks were in the high teens or
20s.
Doh!! The thing is it could actually be a good thing if Boston elects not to
cash in that Denver pick at the first opportunity, since:

1) in subsequent drafts the top-five lottery protection for Denver will
disappear; and

2) 7 out of the 10 top 2001 prepsters (ranked by Bob Gibbons) have
committed
letters-of-intent to attend college. This clearly does not guarantee
anything,
but the mini-trend right now is for them to follow in the footsteps of Eddie
Griffin, Zach Randolph and Gerald Wallace (the top three rated prepsters
last
year even ahead of Darius Miles) and attend a year of college before making
the
big jump to the pros.

2001 Prepsters who have declared for college include 6-11 300 pound Eddy
Curry
(#1), 6-4 MJ-esque shooting guard Kelvin Tolbert (#2) and 6-3 point guard
Dajuan Wagner (#5), who scored 81 points in a game last year. The other top
five players at this stage are power forward Ousmanne Cisse from Oak Hill,
VA,
and 7-1 Tyson Chandler from Compton, CA. Note that Tyson Chandler (the most
likely prepster to turn pro) is listed at just 215 pounds and may be years
from
making an impact, like in the case of Jermaine O'Neil. It could be to his
advantage to sign with UCLA instead of the pros.

On Thursday, December 7th, Eddy Curry and Tyson Chandler will meet for the
first time as part of a one-day tournament in St Louis (Shop'n Save/KMOX
Shootout). How Chandler (and Curry) do might go a long way toward
influencing
their decision to turn pro. They will both be playing with their own
highschool
teams, so the level of execution and comfort zone of the players should be
higher than typical All Star games. Reportedly 23 NBA teams have requested
credentials to watch this showdown between the Compton Dominguez (CA) and
Illinois, Thornwood teams (kind of an "Ali-Frazier", or at least
"Alcinder-Hayes" type of matchup). In advance of the game the Bob Gibbons
site
has very mixed reviews of Tyson Chandler (but universal praise for Curry):

"Chandler has the talent to be an immediate contributor in the NBA, he is
the
best shotblocker I have ever seen on the high school or college level. He
blocks with both hands and does it so easily, he patiently watches the
slasher
rise and without body contact he pummels the shots with either hand away
from
the hoop. He also scores with ease and rebounds above and beyond the skills
of
most elite post players. Chandler added that UCLA and Arizona were the
favorites to land him, should he not go to the NBA directly. But watch him
play
and you will see why we don't think he will ever play college basketball. He
is
tremendously gifted."
Clint Jackson, High Major Hoops Atlantic East

"While he's clearly a very gifted athlete, with an amazing upside, Tyson's
skills have not developed the way you'd hope they would -- particularly when
it
comes to his low-post game. Frankly, he doesn't have a low-post game...and
we're not sure he's trying to develop one. He looks like a guy who has
decided
he's going to play SF in the NBA. He spends most of his time shooting jump
shots these days and when he does go to the low block, he gets pushed out
routinely and stays out on the perimeter. His rebounding was pretty much
non-existent and, overall, he just didn't put out much effort on either end
of
the court. Again, he's got a special combination of size and athleticism
that
will make him a first round pick in the draft next year, but he needs to
start
working a lot harder on his overall game if he wants to be a high lottery
pick."
Greg Hicks, PacWest Hoops

Joe

p.s. Tough loss last night. I had insomnia so I listened in on WEEI. There
is
very little margin for error on this team. Walker shot over 50% and nearly
had
a triple double, and Pierce caught on fire in the last three minutes. You
can't
ask for much more, yet we still came up short. Defense is really becoming a
big Achilles Heal. As usual, Cedric Maxwell questioned why we need to double
non-scoring threats like Outlaw in the low post and leave open jumpers for
guys
like Pat Garrity. Max said that double-teams down low don't get the job done
in
the NBA if the opponent sees it everytime. He says you have to mix it up
with
straight defense to get any surprise value out of it. Nothing new there.

Sounds too much like Mark Madsen to me - late first, early second round pick
only.

I'd say Woods will drop to 6 to 10. If other players come out then theres
too
much talent infront of him.

They will. It happens a lot that a poor team gets off to a good start before
faltering.
