If McGrady was re-signed by Toronto while they were under the cap then he's
not a BYC player. If they were over the cap, Toronto could only take back 50%
of the first year salary he re-signed for. My guess is they were over the cap
when they re-signed him but by dropping his full salary off their books and
not taking back any salary in exchange, they are now back under the cap and
it is that amount they are under the cap now that they might dangle in front
of Mo Taylor.
But either way, by Orlando being well under the cap, they had the cap room to
take back more in salary then the amount they were sending out, in this case
none as it is a future first rounder they gave up; so it works fine from
Toronto's perspective. It also was to McGrady's advantage because it upped
the $$ and length of years he could sign for from 6 to 7 years and the annual
percentage of increase is also greater for re-signing your own free agents
vs. signing outside free agents. And now since both Hill and McGrady have
been traded, both are no longer BYC players.
