is the working man's point guard...The dismantling of the Chicago
Bulls
has given him a starting job and has shown the NBA how solid a player
he can be...A terrific defender, the Chicago native has made a fine living
by putting his nose in the opposing guard's jock every night...A product of
Collins High...More importantly, a product of the Chicago playgrounds,
circa
the late 1980's, that brought you Ken Norman, Tim Hardaway, and Brian
Leach (playground legend)...Drafted by the Sacramento Kings in 1991 to
back up Spud Webb at the point, Randy quickly became a crowd favorite...
Set
a franchise record with 6 steals in the third period of a 1/11/92 game
against the Milwaukee Bucks...Scored 12 points, on 6 of 6 shooting, in his
NBA debut against the Los Angeles Clippers...Randy's numbers soon got
better and better with playing time that got longer and longer...Randy
signed
with the Bulls before the 1995-96 season, and lead the League in
steals per
48 minutes the next three years...The range is 18 feet on his
jumper, but
anything inside of that will drop consistently...Every two weeks
or so he would
drop 12 or 14 points, on 6 of 8 or 7 of 10 shooting, when the
Bulls ran a guard-
around screen with him and center Luc Longley...Threw down
the nastiest
dunk of the 1996-97 NBA season, a left handed slam over the Los
Angeles
Lakers' Corie Blount and Elden Campbell, in a thrilling Bulls
comeback victory...
A good slasher and careful ball handler...He wore #0
until 1996-97, when
Robert Parish showed up with his #00, the NBA wouldn't
allow a #0 and a
#00 on the same team...Randy tried the #2, but that digit
is famously (in Chicago,
anyway) cursed due to the Bulls' resistance to
retiring it in honor of Norm Van Lier,
so he switched to #1...Took off in
1999, with shot opportunities, and hit a game
winner against the Toronto
Raptors...Loves the jumper from the extended elbow
on either side...Signed
to a 5-year, 7.5 million dollar deal until after the 1999-00
season.
