Pippen wears out another welcome

Free agent Rick Mahorn, meanwhile, is
waiting for the phone to ring. ''I'm not
too stressed about it,'' he said. ''I'd
love to play one more year. I'd love to
play up in Boston, to prove to those young
guys that you can be old and
competitive.'' Mahorn played for the
Sixers last season, and Larry Brown loved
his locker-room presence. The Sixers have
no room for him this year, it seems.
Mahorn said if he does not get a job, he'd
like to get into coaching, although a
player/assistant position might be the
best of both worlds. ''That's basically
what I was last year in Philly, anyway,''
he said ... The Celtics will christen
Conseco Fieldhouse, the retro/avant garde
home of the Indiana Pacers. Indy's home
opener against Boston is Nov. 6. Of the
five arenas opening this year - Philips
Arena in Atlanta, American Airlines Arena
in Miami, Staples Center in Los Angeles,
and the Pepsi Center in Denver - the
Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis is the
only one opening with a basketball game.
However, of those five arenas, only
Indiana's is not shared with a National
Hockey League team. Still, you've got to
love Indy to open the building with a
basketball game. The only thing better
would have been the Kingston Trio.
