Can any hoop historians give us a perspective on this? Seems to me that virtually all teams throw in the bench for about the last two minutes of the third quarter and the first two of the fourth, giving the starters a long (6-7 minute) break. But, IIRC, Utah (for example) always has either Malone or Stockton on the floor. Are mass substitutions - a second team, essentially - common in the NBA? Now? Ever?
