All-Star talk

This thread reminds me of a good proposal a few years ago in baseball,
although I forget its author. He posited that there should be three votes
for the All-Stars: one by the fans, one by the writers, and one by the
managers (or players - don't recall.) If someone was named by two groups, he
was in. Otherwise, the fan favorite was elected. (Personally, I find fan
voting a joke and would abolish it, but concede its marketing value.)
Basketball, in particular, is ill-served by its all-star game, although
the event is usually entertaining. Exhibit A: "veteran all-star." Ring any
bells? It validates the "me-firstism" that is too rampant in the game these
days.
And y'know what? I think these guys actually LISTENED to Bill Russell.
