      Observations, laments, and miscellaneous fulminations:

Player of the half-week: Adrian Griffin, who you probably never heard of.
      He's a long-armed, 6-5 swingman for Boston, a surprise roster stick
despite his winning MVP in the CBA last year. Rick Pitino started him in
the season opener, and Griffin produced a Pippenesque line -- 28 minutes,
14 points, seven assists, two steals -- while holding Vince Carter to 12
points. Fluke, right? In the second game, Griffin gets nine points, eight
boards, five assists, and four steals and holds Juwan Howard to a dozen in
the Celtics' win over Washington. It's always a nice NBA story when a
survivor gets his 15 minutes of fame, and now it's twice as nice.
