Rhode Island's Odom might spurn draft and return to school
By Globe Staff and Wires, 06/16/99
University of Rhode Island forward Lamar Odom, who could be the top pick
in the NBA draft, might be rethinking his decision to turn pro. Odom
skipped a league-wide physical in Chicago over the weekend and canceled
a scheduled workout in Charlotte with the Hornets today. Hornets vice
president Bob Bass thinks Odom wants to return to college. Odom, 19,
returned to URI Sunday and is staying with Rams coach Jerry DeGregorio,
according to the Providence Journal-Bulletin. Odom played one season for
Rhode Island before announcing last month that he would turn pro. He has
until June 23 to pull out of the draft. However, he threatened his two
remaining seasons of college eligibility if he signed with an agent.
NCAA spokeswoman Jan Jankowski said Rhode Island has the option of
appealing for Odom's reinstatement if he wants to return to school
