Kevin McHale verses the mailman

The interesting thing about the power forward position is that it never
ceases to evolve -– more so
than any other position, really.

In the late 1970s and early '80s, the best power forwards were still the
hard-hat, lunch-pail enforcer
types such as Maurice Lucas. Then the standard bearer became Kevin McHale,
a 4-spot Mozart
whose dazzling post repertoire hadn't been seen or duplicated since.

Then Karl Malone arrived, and in his 14 years he has redefined the
position, to the point where he is
rightfully recognized as the greatest ever to play it.

I guess any Celtic fan would argue with the statement that Malone is the
greatest ever to play power forward. McHale averaged 17 points, 7 rebound
a game (almost 2 assists per game! Whodathunkit?)

Malone's stats are 26 pts/ 10 rebounds per game.

But the stats leave out two crucial points. Of course the championships
say it all. The second point: When you have to go to your power forward
with the game on the line, which do you want, a Malone turn-around jumper,
or Kevin McHale laying four or five moves on a guy, before he does the up
and under and goes to the foul line? (79% from the line)

IMHO, no player "redifines" a position unless he wins some championships...
