The Mavericks appear prepared to part ways with two veterans who play
Leon Smith's position: free agent forwards Samaki Walker and A.C. Green.
Mavericks coach-general manager Don Nelson acknowledged Monday that he
has begun talks with Boston in an attempt to arrange a sign-and-trade
deal for Walker, Dallas' 1996 first-round pick out of Louisville.

Walker - who fell out of favor with Nelson last season after spurning a
four-year, $20 million contract extension - traveled to Boston recently
to work out for the Celtics. Agent Norm Nixon said "it's pretty certain
Samaki's not going to be back" with the Mavericks, adding that Walker
has also generated serious interest from Miami.

Green is expected to join a contender when free agents can start signing
contracts Sunday. The Mavericks remain desperate to re-sign free agents
Gary Trent and Cedric Ceballos.
