Pervis on tap for C's

The Shaw's Pro Summer League opens tomorrow at UMass-Boston. The Celtics
have something in common with the six NBA teams they'll host at the
weeklong event: Their roster is a grab bag of little-known players,
well-known players and soon-to-be wealthy players. There's even a
forgotten player.
Pervis Ellison, who missed last season after undergoing November surgery
on his right ankle, is expected to be among the contract players suiting
up for the Celtics. The 6-foot-10 forward, no stranger to rehabilitation
during his 10-year NBA career, has been working out at the Celtics'
practice facility in Waltham in preparation for summer-league action.
Ellison, one of just four players left on the roster from the M.L. Carr
era, is entering the final season of a six-year contract. When healthy, he
provides the Celtics with much-needed rebounding and shot-blocking. But
Ellison has rarely been healthy, appearing in a total of 39 games in
1996-97 and 1997-98 before last year's washout.
Vitaly Potapenko and Walter McCarty are also expected to be among the
Celtics' contract players participating in the league. Both played in the
Fila Pro Summer League earlier this month in Long Beach, Calif., as did
Paul Pierce and Tony Battie. There's been no word yet on whether Pierce,
Battie or team captain Antoine Walker will be among the contract players
playing for the Celtics this week.
Among the NBA hopefuls expected to represent the Celtics are Boston native
Wayne Turner, the point guard on Rick Pitino's 1996 national title squad
at Kentucky, and ex-Texas standout Kris Clack, the Celtics' lone draft
pick this season.
Tickets are $8 per doubleheader session and can be purchased at the
FleetCenter box office or by calling Ticketmaster at (617/508) 931-2222.
