                       The early take on the draft, if those underclassmen
                       expected to declare to make themselves available for the
                       draft, shapes up like this, according to a few NBA scouts:
                       1. Lamar Odom, Rhode Island; 2. Steve Francis, Maryland;
                       3. Elton Brand, Duke; 4. Wally Szczerbiak, Miami Ohio); 5.
                       Richard Hamilton, Connecticut.

                       The next tier includes Frederic Weis (a post player from
                       France), Andre Miller (Utah), James Posey (Xavier), Quincy
                       Lewis (Minnesota), Jason Terry (Arizona), Kenny Thomas
                       (New Mexico), Jamel Thomas (Providence), Tim James (Miami,
                       Fla.) and, possibly Lee Nailon (TCU).

                       A few scouts told the Word that several underclassmen have
                       sent out feelers about their draft status. Included in
                       that list are Georgia's Jumaine Jones, Fresno State's
                       Courtney Alexander, Michigan State's Mateen Cleaves,
                       Duke's William Avery, St. John's Ron Artest and high
                       school seniors DerMarr Johnson and Leon Smith. A feeler is
                       a harmless way of saying they're trying to get a sense of
                       where they would be drafted and seeing if it were worth
                       declaring.
