Rice likely headed to Lakers for Jones

By BARRY JACKSON

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Once again, an All-Star-caliber shooting guard appears
on the verge of being traded, but not to the Heat.

Although nothing has been confirmed by either team, the Charlotte Hornets
were working Monday on a trade that would send Glen Rice, the Heat's
all-time leading scorer, to the Lakers in a five-player deal.

The Hornets reportedly would give up Rice, J.R. Reid and B.J. Armstrong.
Charlotte would get Eddie Jones and Elden Campbell.

Because Rice is out at least two weeks after elbow surgery, the Lakers are
reluctant to make the trade before the teams play each other Feb. 16. The
trade deadline is March 13.

Rice originally rejected the Lakers' five-year, $55 million extension, but
he reportedly changed his mind in the past two days and gave his blessing
to the trade. Rice had been seeking a six-year deal for the maximum $84
million, but Los Angeles was not interested in Rice at that price.
