Re: Mo's Mail

Hi Jim,

I must be very careful how I respond to this because it's a very difficult
subject for me to handle. This is the kind of story which should be told
because it allows for your average fan to get a sense of what the player and
his family deal with regularly. For anyone to make those remarks about his
Dad, well, it is more than unfortunate for any player to have to endure that
stuff.

I think the point here is that *some* fans in Boston *still* get their
jollies in this demented fashion. Bill Russell and his family suffered
numerous indignities from some less than classy cowards. I guess I'm being
naive to believe that people are more sensitive to people's racial
differences in this current era. That's what I want to think, anyway, but
the reality is that some zealots are still out there trying to fan the
flames when the chance presents itself.

I just don't think it should be dismissed so cavalierly as a futile attempt
to dig for a story. Like you said, Boston isn't the only city where this
stuff happens. But it shouldn't be happening at all. What is gained by
slurring Mo's Dad? Who gets anything out of that? I think it's remarkable
that he was able to stay as focussed as he did for the duration of the
season amid that kind of ridiculousness. I still hold out faint hope that
Vaughn will re-sign with us, if just because I'd like to see someone who
could jump ship, stay and finish a career with the organization who drafted
them.

Cecil
