I am not taking the players' or owners' side on this, but there are ways to 
"hide" revenue without getting into trouble.  Suppose the team owner also 
owns the radio station that broadcasts the team's games.  The owner can 
"sell" the broadcast rights for far less than their actual value.  He still 
gets the revenue, but it shows up on the radio station's books instead of the 
team's.  That way, it is not "basketball-related income" that has to be split 
with the players.
