Peter May: Lakers Offer Van Exel For Knight; Turned Down

Here's what Peter May said in today's Boston Globe:

"There has been a lot of trade talk, including an interesting one yesterday
that had the Lakers offering Nick Van Exel to Boston, even up, for Travis
Knight. LA's thinking was that it could dump the unwanted Van Exel as well as
reclaim Knight's faltering career. The Celtics would be done with Knight's
contract and either re-route Van Exel or keep him; he has only one year left on
his contract. Boston apparently did not want to do the deal."

Comments: I can't believe the C's wouldn't do this deal. Perhaps, Travis will
be included as part of another trade.

Other News: May reports he's heard that the Celtics have "dangled Ron Mercer
and their own choice..." to Vancouver for Pick No.2, if Olowokandi isn't
drafted by the clueless Clippers.

He also says, that the salary cap has diminished many trade proposals, because
very few teams have the cap space to pick up extraneous contracts. Toronto
and the Clippers do, but the Grizzlies are lacking in that department.
