CELTICS NOTEBOOK
Pitino says no way on three-way
By Michael Holley, Globe Staff, 02/04/98
HARLOTTE, N.C. - Rick Pitino put a halt to a few rotisserie fantasies last
night. While the idea of Marcus Camby or Penny Hardaway in Celtic green is
interesting, it probably won't happen.
For days, there have been rumors of a three-way deal involving the Celtics,
Raptors, and Magic. In one scenario, the Celtics would lose Chauncey
Billups and Travis Knight, acquire Camby and draft picks, and watch their
Atlantic Division rival, Orlando, lose Hardaway and add Damon Stoudamire.
The Raptors also would receive Rony Seikaly in the deal. There was an even
more exciting proposal than that: Hardaway (and his $7.5 million salary)
landing in Boston.
''There's been no conversation,'' Pitino said last night. ''We haven't had
dialogue with either team.''
Pitino went on to say that he was disappointed with a New York sportswriter
who may have begun the rumor.
As for trades in general, Pitino said, ''People have called us. But unless
we can get a fair deal, we're not going to do anything. Right now I think
we have the luxury of waiting for a fair deal.''
In any case, Pitino and Chris Wallace should dial Orlando and see what
happens. Hardaway can be a free agent after the 1998-99 season; he and
Chuck Daly are not buddies. It's unlikely that the guard will be pushed out
of town before the Feb. 19 deadline, but a phone call couldn't hurt, could
it?
Rice isn't cooking
If Glen Rice were having a dinner party tonight, he would not invite his
coach, Dave Cowens. And if Cowens happened to crash the party, he probably
would tell Rice to make his shots. Here's the problem: Rice doesn't believe
he is getting enough opportunities; Cowens wants his All-Star forward to
create his own opportunities. Thus, there is basketball gridlock in
Hornetland. Rice was only 3 for 9 from the field in last night's 93-89
victory over the Celitcs. Or, look at it this way: Vernon Maxwell, Matt
Geiger, and David Wesley each took more shots then Rice. Wesley scored 15
points, but he was shaky with the ball (six turnovers) ... Billups couldn't
free himself from foul trouble all night, took three shots (missed them
all), and finished with 2 points. Dana Barros (14 points) did another good
job in relief ... Antoine Walker picked up his 11th technical of the season
... The Celtics did not have Ron Mercer last night because of flu symptoms.
It has been an epidemic this year for the Celtics, claiming play
rs, broadcasters, and coaches. Dee Brown started at shooting guard, went 41
minutes, and scored 20 points.
