NEW YORK, April 27 -- Tim Duncan of the San Antonio Spurs today was named the winner of the Schick Rookie of the Year Award for the 1997-98 season/

Tim Duncan

Tim Duncan garnered 113 of 116 possible votes for Rookie of the Year, the largest percentage of the vote since Shaquille O'Neal in 1992-93.

Duncan received 113 of 116 possible votes (97.4%) from a panel of sports writers and broadcasters throughout the United States and Canada. New Jersey's Keith Van Horn finished second with three votes. The percentage of votes received by Duncan marked the largest margin of victory since Shaquille O'Neal received 98.0% of the vote in 1992-93.

Duncan, the first selection in the 1997 NBA Draft, averaged 21.1 points, 11.9 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 2.51 blocked shots, while shooting .549 (706-for-1,287) from the field in 39.1 minutes per game. He started all 82 games and ranked third in rebounding, fourth in field goal percentage, sixth in blocked shots and 13th in scoring among league leaders. He led all rookies in scoring, rebounding, shot blocking and field goal percentage, and ranked seventh in assists.

The 7-0 forward/center from Wake Forest University led the NBA in double-doubles with 57 and became only the 19th rookie in NBA history to average at least 20 points and 10 rebounds per game. He led the Spurs in scoring 34 times and scored 10 or more points 77 times, including 52 consecutive games to end the season. Duncan scored 20 or more points 50 times and 30 or more points eight times.

Duncan joined Ralph Sampson (1983-84) and David Robinson (1989-90) as the only players ever to win Schick Rookie of the Month honors every month of the season since the NBA started giving out the award prior to the 1981-82 season.

Duncan, the only rookie to play in the 1998 NBA All-Star Game and the first rookie to compete in the game since Detroit's Grant Hill in 1995, also became the only rookie to be named NBA Player of the Week this season when he was honored for the week ending March 1. Nineteen rookies have been so honored in NBA history.

The 116-member voting panel consisted of 29 national media members and three media members who cover the NBA regularly from each of the league's 29 cities. Schick, in its 14th year as the Official Razor and Blades of the NBA, sponsors the league's rookie programs, including the Schick Rookie Game, the Schick Rookie of the Month and Schick Rookie of the Year Awards and the Schick All-Rookie Team. In addition, Schick is a support sponsor of the NBA Draft. The Schick Shaving Products Group is a division of Warner-Lambert Company.
