ON THE road to recovery, David Robinson's back has stiffened up,
and just in time. The San Antonio Spurs are reeling and their best
interests - a shot at the first pick overall in June - will not be
served by Robinson returning to play the final meaningless month of
a lost season.
Not only has Robinson's long stretch of inactivity hurt the
Spurs, but Sean Elliott, Chuck Person and Charles Smith have missed
generous stretches. That's why the Spurs want to finish this season
as quickly as possible, preferably without Robinson.
They're not even competitive anymore. As it stands now, only
the Boston Celtics loom as their competition for the first overall
pick, because the expansion teams aren't eligible to get the first
pick until 1999.
"If we do get that high pick, someone who can produce right
away, then you can go back to David's first year," backup center
Will Perdue said. "The Spurs broke the record for the biggest
turnaround. We could do it again."
