<font face="arial" size="+1" color="#000000"><b>Clock is ticking as Sixers ponder second pick</b></font><p>
<br>Associated Press
<hr>
PHILADELPHIA -- On Saturday, the Philadelphia 76ers had a
pretty good idea who they were going to draft with the second
overall pick in Wednesday night's NBA draft.<p>

But Billy King, the Sixers' vice president of basketball operations, said
things have changed.<p>

"I thought we were locked in on who we were going to take," he
said Tuesday night. "Then Monday we watched more film and it got cloudy."<p>

<table width=212 align=right cellspacing=12><tr><td><img src="/editors/media/photo/1997/june/24/a_cbillups.jpg" height=320 width=212></td></tr><tr><td align=left><font size="-1"><b>Having Chauncey Billups in the Sixers backcourt could take ball-handling pressure off Allen Iverson.</b></font><hr></td></tr></table><p>

Assuming they don't trade the pick -- and King admitted there has
been a lot of interest from other teams -- the 76ers have said they
will choose either <a href="/nba/draft97/players/profiles/vanhorn.html">Keith Van Horn</a>, <a href="/nba/draft97/players/profiles/billups.html">Chauncey Billups</a> or <a href="/nba/draft97/players/profiles/battie.html">Tony Battie</a> after San Antonio picks <a href="/nba/draft97/players/profiles/duncan.html">Tim Duncan</a> with the first
selection overall.<p>

Van Horn and Billups have said they don't want to play for Philadelphia, but Sixers coach <a href="/editors/nbacoach/brown.html">Larry Brown</a> said he doesn't care about that.<p>

"If we like Van Horn or Billups and their agents don't think
they ought to be here, that's not my problem," said Brown, hired
in May to revive a team that has averaged 59 losses over the last
five seasons. "I think it's very unfortunate."<p>

The first name he mentioned was Billups, the 6-foot-4 point
guard who visited Philadelphia, but refused to work out for Brown.<p>

The 76ers spent last season trying to groom high-scoring Rookie of the Year <a href="/nba/profiles/profile/3094.html">Allen Iverson</a> to play the point. But Brown is intrigued by the
possibility of having the taller Billups start in a backcourt with Iverson as the shooting guard.<p>

That would move <a href="/nba/profiles/profile/3005.html">Jerry Stackhouse</a> to small forward, a position
for which he might be best suited.<p>

"I think Allen needs to be off the ball a little bit," Brown said. "(Billups) gives us great flexibility."<p>

Aside from Duncan, Utah's Van Horn, a 6-foot-10 small forward, seems
to be the most coveted player in the draft. A deadly outside
shooter, he also possesses a solid inside game, which figures to
make him a difficult matchup for whoever guards him.<p>

"I think he will have a quicker impact than the others," said
Brown, noting that Van Horn played a full four college seasons.<p>

By contrast, Texas Tech's Battie, a 6-11 center, is a late
bloomer, growing four inches in his three years in college.<p>

"He shoots the ball much better than we expected, and he plays more
than one position, which I love," Brown said.<p>

With the trade for Boston's <a href="/nba/profiles/profile/2150.html">Dino Radja</a> falling through Tuesday
night, the 76ers might lean toward Battie to provide some
much-needed help down low, especially since it now appears power
forward <a href="/nba/profiles/profile/0063.html">Derrick Coleman</a> doesn't figure in Brown's plans.<p>

In his first conversation with Coleman after being named coach,
Brown said Coleman told him he didn't think the 76ers could win and
that he wanted to be traded.<p>

"Nobody is banging down the doors to get Derrick," Brown said.
"And this is a guy who played 50-something games last year and
averaged 18 (points) and 10 (rebounds)."<p>

Coleman's reputation for being inconsistent and not particularly
driven -- along with his $8.1 million contract -- have scared off
potential trade partners.<p>

"If we could get somebody just to take his contract, that would
be value in my mind," Brown said. "He doesn't want to be here and
no one wants him."<p>

Brown pegged the 76ers' chances of trading the draft pick at 25
percent, but discussions with a number of teams have cropped up as
the draft draws closer.<p>

Among the teams the 76ers are known to have talked to are the
Denver Nuggets and New Jersey Nets, both of whom have picks in the
top seven.<p>

Brown said if he did trade, he would accept no less than the
eighth overall pick in return. Philadelphia also has three picks in
the second round.
