Globe report on camp

Awojobi absent

Red Auerbach Arena at Brandeis University in Waltham
was hot last
night as more than 2,400 fans watched players try to
gain roster spots.
Whether the players wore green or white wasn't an
issue. Neither was
the final score. But by game time, some notable names
were missing,
including former Boston University star Tunji Awojobi.
Asked about
Awojobi's status, a team official said, ``Put it this
way. He's not on the
roster anymore.''... Meanwhile, Boston College's Danya
Abrams
represented Boston well. The 6-foot-7-inch forward
gravitated toward
the blocks all night, finishing with 14 points ... Dee
Brown stroked jump
shots from all over the court. Brown tallied 19 points
... On several
occasions, Brown connected with rookie Ron Mercer, who
scored 23
points. Meanwhile, his 1997 lottery pick partner,
Chauncey Billups, sat
out because of an injury ... Surprisingly, the game's
leading scorer was
Herman Alston, who played for the US Basketball
League's
Westchester (N.Y.) Kings this year. Alston finished
with 25 po

nts, showing he's got NBA range and a nifty running
jumper ... The
recipient of the evening's two nicest passes was
Rice's Brent Scott. In
the second quarter, Eric Murdock made a no-look bounce
pass to a
streaking Scott, who jammed home 2 of his 18 points. A
quarter later,
he scored thanks to a bullet pass across the lane from
Brown ... Eric
Williams scored 13 points and pulled in a number of
offensive boards ...
Keith Closs, a 7-3, 212-pound long shot, blocked
several shots and
                  scored 10 points.
