Notes regarding player salaries and the salary cap:


The salary cap is $24.3 million per team (Toronto and Vancouver are 
limited to 75% of the cap for 1996-97) this season. It increases to at 
least $25.6 million next season. 

The minimum salary for veterans is $247,500; the minimum for rookies is 
$220,000. 

Exemptions: 
*A team can re-sign their own free agents without regard to the salary 
cap. 

*Teams are allowed to use half of injured player's salary, if the player 
is sidelined a majority of the season, to sign a free agent player. 

*Each team is given a $1 million exemption that can be used once over a 
two-year period to sign either one or two players.
