I believe that soon after the media picked up the quote, Thomas said that
he was misquoted...

Actually, the media replayed him saying exactly what you quoted.  He was not
misquoted.  What he said was that he was being sarcastic (joking) when he
made the original statement.  If you saw the tape it seemed possible that he
may have been kidding, but it was not clear one way or the other.
