After a brief hibernation, NBA.com Special Delivery is back,
and reminding you that it's only 81 days until Halloween...and
the opening day of the 1997-98 NBA Season. Too early to begin
thinking about the upcoming season? Not for the e-Mailman.
Karl is ready to throw out some questions for your discussion in
the "e-Mailman Question of the Week." Also, the league schedule is
out, summer league play has concluded and teams are positioning
themselves with rookies and free agents in hopes of wrestling the
title away from Chicago.
NBA.com fills the void between now and training camp with features,
breaking news on player signings, a look back summer league play
and coverage of the WNBA Championships. The list below merely
scratches the hardwood surface. For a comprehensive look at what's
happening around the NBA, you're only one click away: http://www.nba.com/
================================
1. THE E-MAILMAN RETURNS!
================================
Talk about a short offseason! After giving the Chicago Bulls all that
they could handle in the NBA Finals, Karl Malone took a brief respite
(maybe he was visiting some of your suggested fishing haunts?), but
he's back in the mail room and eager to begin his second season as
NBA.com's e-Mailman. So, collect your thought, and send Karl your
answer to the following question: "What do you still hope to
accomplish during your summer vacation?"
.

2. NBA OVERTIME
====================
Since it remains to be seen if this year's draft class will produce
"the next Michael Jordan" or "another Patrick Ewing" we went back and
looked at the drafts that produced THE Michael and THE Patrick, as well
as a number of other NBA stars.
Overtime, a new NBA.com feature, will take a periodic look back into the
league's vast annals of history. The first foray takes us back to the NBA
Drafts of 1984 and 1985, which produced so many of the stars that have
shaped basketball's modern era. During a period that propelled one-named
artists like Prince and Madonna to stardom, the basketball world welcomed
Hakeem, Michael, Charles and Patrick. At the same time, two guys named
Stockton and Malone formed the most prominent duo this side of Wham!
Overtime honors 18 draftees from that two-year gold mine of talent, all of
whom are still prospering in the NBA. Take a then-and-now look at our photo
gallery, view classic video clips and jump back to the era that put talking
...cars
and pastel sports coats on the map.

3. FREE AGENT SIGNINGS
========================
During this who-went-where portion of the NBA season, NBA.com helps
you keep on top of each free agent signing. In addition to posting current
free agent news on the home page, NBA.com has compiled an all-inclusive
list of 1997 free agents, including where they have signed for the 1997-98
season. Also, NBA analyst Chris Ekstrand takes an in-depth look at some
of the best players still available, and what they might bring to new teams.
To see an updated list of who has signed for the upcoming season,

4. SUMMER REVUE REVIEW
==========================
On August 2, play concluded in the Rocky Mountain Revue, the last of three
NBA summer leagues. Among the veterans and free agents vying for
invitations to training camp were a number of promising rookies who
donned NBA uniforms for the first time. How did Tim Duncan fare with
the Spurs? What early impact did Ron Mercer have on the new-look Boston
...Celtics?
Complete game recaps, team rosters and final results are available at:

5. WNBA: THE CHAMPIONSHIP IS COMING
===================================
The first annual WNBA Championship is drawing near, quicker than
a dashing Comet. Check out WNBA.com beginning August 25 for an
in-depth analysis of the WNBA Semifinals and the WNBA Championship
Game. Coverage will include features on all four participating teams, chats,
mailboxes and live reports from all three games. Visit WNBA.com during
championship week for all of the latest WNBA news:

Meanwhile, as the regular season winds down, the New York Liberty
are trying to fend off the Houston Comets for the league's top record.
One of New York's most popular players, forward Sue Wicks, will take
time out from that pursuit this Thursday at 4:30 to chat about her first
season with the Liberty. Preview the Wicks chat at:

6. TEAMS PONDER LONGER 3-POINT ARC
=====================================
Earlier this summer, four new rule changes were suggested by the
Competition Committee and approved by the league's Board of
Governors. The new rule expected to have the most dramatic impact
on the game is the extended three-point line. The arc has been restored
to its original distance of 23 feet, 9 inches, except in the corners, where
it has always been at 22 feet.
The line was brought in to a uniform 22-foot distance prior to the
1994-95 season. In three seasons with the shorter arc, three-point
attempts have increased dramatically, from 9.9 per team per game in
1993-94 to 16.8 last season. We surveyed several NBA head coaches
and general managers to find out how the new arc might impact play
this season. Their responses can be found at:
