border=3D0 align=3Dleft><b>EMPE, Ariz. -- There are few things an NBA =
coach loves more</b> than a legitimate shotblocking center. Such an =
individual allows the other four defenders on his team to contest every =
perimeter shot, pressure the ball more aggressively and gamble for =
steals every now and then, secure in the knowledge that the rejector is =
lurking underneath.
<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Center Kelvin Cato of Iowa State, 6-11 and 245 =
pounds of imposing muscle, enjoyed a reign of terror all week here in =
Arizona. When he wasn't spiking opponents' shots like an outsized Kirch =
Kiraly, Cato changed their field goal attempts to desperate flings that =
had no hope of finding the basket.=20
<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; In three games, Cato blocked a 1997 Nike Desert =
Classic high of 14 shots, including four in Friday night's 90-84 victory =
by Cato's Central team in the third place game. Cato added 12 points, 8 =
rebounds and 3 steals to complete a well-rounded evening. So impressive =
was Cato that he was voted the Classic's Most Valuable Player despite =
his team finishing third among the four teams in Tempe.=20
<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; For the tournament, Cato averaged 10.7 points on =
64 percent field goal shooting. His 14 blocks was nine more than the =
second-best total posted here, five by Villanova's Jason Lawson. NBA =
scout were unanimous that Cato probably had risen more than player based =
on his fine showing here, but few would be pinned down on exactly how =
high Cato could go. With the usual dearth of quality centers after =
expected top pick Tim Duncan of Wake Forest, Cato could be chosen quite =
early in the draft.

<p><b> Championship Game: Atlantic 91, Pacific 79</b>
<br>UCLA's Charles O'Bannon scored 12 of his game-high 20 points in the =
first half, enabling the Atlantic to jump out to a 53-35 halftime lead. =
O'Bannon hit all six of his field goal attempts in the first half, =
mostly on explosive bursts to the basket and fast breaks. Otis Hill of =
Syracuse turned in his second straight strong game after an ordinary =
opener, netting 10 of his 14 points in the first half, primarily on his =
pet shot, a short jump hook in the lane.
<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Minnesota guard Bobby Jackson, who exploded for =
a Classic-high 28 points in Thursday's night's game, contributed 13 =
points Friday, while Iowa point guard Andre Woolridge added 10 points to =
go with a team-high five assists.
<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The Pacific team, playing without Providence =
forward <a href=3D"/draft97/austin_croshere.html"><b>Austin =
Croshere</b></a> (flu) for the second straight night, struggled to find =
an offensive rhythm until mounting a late charge that sliced the deficit =
to four in the last two minutes of the game. Ace Custis of Virginia Tech =
led the Pacific with 16 points and a team-high nine rebounds, but it was =
Shea Seals of Tulsa (14 points) who had kept his team within striking =
distance by driving to the basket and drawing fouls.=20
<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Seals, who shot only 32 percent for the three =
games, did make 21 of 26 foul shots (81 percent) in the tournament and =
tied O'Bannon for tournament top scoring honors with a 15.3 ppg average. =
The 6-6, 220-pound Seals needs to improve his perimeter game, but he has =
many of the athletic qualities that teams desire for the big shooting =
guard position.
<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Kiwane Garris of Illinois added nine points and =
a team-high six assists for the Pacific.

<p><b>Third Place Game: Central 90, Midwest 84</b>
<br>Maryland's Keith Booth paced a balanced attack with 15 points, 5 =
steals and 5 rebounds to help the Central capture its only victory of =
the tournament. The Central had lost each of its first two games by four =
points, but it was not to be denied Friday night, storming out to a =
24-10 lead after one quarter. Booth and Kansas point guard Jacque Vaughn =
(12 points, 7 assists, 4 steals) combined for seven steals in the first =
half as 14 Midwest turnovers were converted into 16 Central points. When =
the Central backcourt was not stealing the ball, Cato was indomitable =
down low, hammering down several opposing shot attempts.
<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; But the victory didn't come easy. Kebu Stewart, =
the Cal State Bakersfield forward who has left his mark on opposing =
forwards trying in vain to keep him off the boards, sparked a ferocious =
second-half comeback by the Midwest, scoring 18 of his game-high 24 =
points after halftime as he nearly single-handedly brought his team all =
the way back. Stewart, the MVP of the Portsmouth Invitational =
Tournament, grabbed 13 rebounds Friday to bring his three-game total to =
a Classic-high 31 for a 10.3 rpg average.
<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; John Thomas of Minnesota added 12 points for the =
Midwest, while Tulane's Jerald Honeycutt and Miami of Ohio's Devin Davis =
added 10 points apiece. Honeycutt, a versatile small forward, also added =
a game-high six steals.

<b>NIKE DESERT CLASSIC NOTES:</b> Paul Grant of Wisconsin didn't have =
the major impact on the Desert Classic that he did at the Portsmouth =
Invitational, but the muscular center did lead the Classic in one =
category: fouls. With the no foul-out rule in effect for the tournament, =
Grant accumulated 26 fouls in 61 minutes of playing time, a staggering =
ratio. But Grant did get one point across, as one NBA scouting director =
pointed out.<br>
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; "I think he wanted to show us that he would not be =
afraid to bang up against any of the big centers in the NBA," said the =
scouting chief. "You can see he won't back down from anyone, and that is =
something we are all looking for. You can never have too many big =
players who will play the physical game in this league."
<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Visitors to the final session of the Nike Desert =
Classic included Georgetown head coach John Thompson, who did not have a =
player competing here this season, and former NBA head coach Tom =
Nissalke. Members of the national media covering the Desert Classic this =
year included ESPN's NBA analyst David Aldridge, West Coast =
correspondent Brent Webber of CNN/Sports Illustrated and pro basketball =
reporter Marty Byrnes of Sports Illustrated.
<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; One current NBA head coach who managed to attend =
several sessions of the Desert Classic was Boston's <a =
href=3D"/celtics/bios/coach.html"><b>M.L. Carr</b></a>, who has a lot at =
stake in the upcoming draft. The Celtics have two lottery picks, their =
own and the first round pick of the Dallas Mavericks, obtained in last =
year's <a href=3D"/playerfile/eric_montross.html"><b>Eric =
Montross</b></a> deal. Carr hopes to add two top players to rookie =
sensation <a href=3D"/playerfile/antoine_walker.html"><b>Antoine =

and begin the task of returning the Celtics to their former glory.=20
