It is tough to trade for a superstar when you have nothing to give. Teams
don't want a lot of mediocre players for superstar unless they feel they
are going to lose that star to free agency, but if you have given up the
team for the star, he won't stay with you when he is a FA. Yes, we could
have tried to stick with our mediocre talent and build through free
agency, but where is the pride in simply buying a team?
