The Who return to UK stage

Mod legends The Who were on Monday night playing their first UK gig for two
years.

The band were due to make their comeback with a series of three dates at the
Forum in Kentish Town, north London, as a warm-up for their Royal Albert Hall
charity performance in aid of the Teenage Cancer Trust next week.

Singer Roger Daltrey, guitarist Pete Townshend, bass player John Entwistle and
drummer Keith Moon formed The Who in 1964.

Entwhistle and Townshend formed their first band at school before joining
Daltrey's band, The Detours, in 1962. They became The Who in February 1964 and
Moon joined two months later.

They burst into the charts in November 1965 with ultimate teen-angst anthem My
Generation before going on to become one of the biggest rock bands of the
1960s and 1970s.

Other hits included Pinball Wizard and Substitute along with the world
famous albums Tommy, Who's Next and Quadrophenia.

The charismatic band forged a reputation for their theatrical stage shows -
including smashing their guitars and amplifiers.

Moon died in 1978 of a drugs overdose and Entwistle died in a Las Vegas hotel
room in June 2002 after taking cocaine on the eve of the band's transatlantic
tour.
