London Who Convention

Hi All, Saturday 6th September saw over five hundred Who fans gather at
The Mean Fiddler in London to honour and celebrate their faourite band as
well as remember the lives of two of it's original members keith moon and
john entwistle. The event began with a short welcome from the committee
and afew announcments regarding the events for the day. During the
Convention part, there were a number of vendors offering various Who
merchndise and memorabilia for sale including the official Convention
booth where T-shirts, posters, programmes etc were available and still
are! (contact me at Circles01@xxxxxxxxxxx).Please remember all profits
from the event as put on by the organisers are going to the TCT. Live Who
videos were shown on the giant screen TV's and there were several
raffles, quizes and competitions throughout the day for prizes such as
advance promo copies of the restored TKAA DVD and leftover JBL Who goodie
bags from the band's last tour, etc...... There were questions and
answers from Dougall Butler and Richard Barnes which was very informative
and funny and though it arrived late, acknowledgements from Pete and a
letter from Roger saying he could not make it but best of luck did cheer
us up. Of cousre the bar was open too! Then Irish Jack gave one of his
now famous readings which gave great insights into his relationship with
the band and the guy really is a legend. Was a pleasure to meet Jack for
the first time-a really nice down to earth man! Then onto the evening's
performances-first a 10 year old young guitar whizz by the name of Jamie
strapped on a red SG and began to play some amazing guitar whislt doing a
quick medley of Who songs-he got a standing ovation. By this time
everyone was in a great mood and when the tribute band 'The Wholigans '
came on the audience was into it from the first moment. They started off
with a great 'Heaven and Hell' as a tribute to John and after playing ICE
and then Substitute without almost stoping stormed into AQO which really
brought the house down. All the old favourites were played and this band
plays it note for note. The audience comprised of young/middle aged and
well dressed youngish mods were amzaed at how this band played The Who!
Incredible. During one quiet moment of spontaneity, both audience and
band broke into 'Barbera Anne' which was quite a revealing moment! A
highlight indeed! At the end of a fantastic WGFA they began to smash
their gear and bits of SG went everywhere, drums flew around the stage
and one went flying into the audience1 (no one hurt)Everyone agreed that
it was a great day out , well worth it and many people met each other for
the first and some second and third times. It was one big happy Who
family! Now back home I'm happy to read that Pete and Roger have
announced their new plans for the next year or two! This is going to be
great. Thanks to everyone who supported the convention, on behalf of the
committe , I thank you sincerely. as regards, the TCT, we were able to
raise1,900 pounds sterling so far and this money will be handed over to
Roger (if possible) to be presented to the TCT in due course. There are
also one or two items which need to be sold and if they are this money
will also be donated to the TCT. If anyone wants any further information
please contact me at the above address or visit theShout.net where you
can read more about the entire event and view pictures etc.... Regards,
Derick.
