What about Tom Petty? There isn't the live thing like Pete, but he is a very thoughtful and innovative song writer with an edge. He writes songs that flat rock (Love is a Long Road, Runnin Down a Dream, Zero from Outer Space) and slower ones which reveal his Pete-like versatility (You Don't Know How it Feels, Mary Jane's Last Dance).
