ANNNNNT!   (Alex Trebek voice):  Oooh.  Sorry.

In 1983, Pete said *he* was quitting The Who & that the remainder of the band 
had his full permission to continue on & even use the name.  

So, it's true:  They never formally broke up as a band.  Pete just quit.  And then
came back.  He re-joined together with the band.  ;-)
