RE: Moon Bio/Tastee Froze

Aye Scott:

>I didn't have the same reaction you had when I read the book. I
thought it was fairly balanced.

I did too when I first read it, so I'm not sure why I'm having a second
opinion now. Maybe it's because the luster of a "complete" Moon bio was
so bright at first. I was just delighted to have a comprehensive
biography without Dougal's cockney glossary in the back. All right, I'm
babbling now...

>I haven't read the book since it came out but weren't there some early
indications of Moon's violent behavior,
>such as the time he angrily showed up at one of Kim's photo shoots &
pulled her away because he was jealous?

Yes, and that's definitely worth mentioning in the traditional
"foreshadowing" technique. But what I'm getting from Fletcher's style,
is gratuitous foreshadowing. The photo shoot incident would be a
perfect situation to set up a foreshadowing, and here he does do that.
But in other tidbits as we read about Keith as a young lad, he just
seems to interject how violent Keith became in unusual spots in the
narrative. I just get this Jerry Springer kind of sensationalism I
can't seem to shake. It's as if he's saying, "This early history of
Keith Moon might not be interesting enough, so I'd better hook the
reader by letting them know of the juicy anecdotes to come."

>so I was OK with the fact that it was discussed in detail. Hey, it's
part of who he was.

And you're right about that. I agree, I think it's important to add if
you're doing a comprehensive biography, but Fletcher seems to be a
little hot to press the issue. You know, upon further review, I think
I'm being a little defensive regarding this element of Keith's life.
Maybe it's too close to Pete's recent troubles and I can't handle
anymore negative portrayals of The 'Ooo. That might explain why I
didn't object to it when I read the book the first time. Will this
odyssey ever end??? Keith the wife beater, John the aging rock star
dying of a coke induced heart attack with a stripper, Pete the alleged
Ped... What's next? Roger is really a woman??? God, I hope not.

The job is yours for the taking. You are truly one of us. We don't
require any positive references as neither Jim or Elvis had any either.
The Colonel was still pissed about Elvis' departure so he refused.

And what is it about the venerable Tastee Freeze and employee hijinx? I
have a friend of mine in Chicago who burned down the Freeze he worked at
when he fell asleep on the job and the kitchen caught fire. I should
ask him if he wants to come work with us.

Sure, your previous Tastee Freeze experience is more than enough
reference. As we are living incognito, when you show up for the
"interview", ask for Fat Albert; that's Elvis' code name nowadays. He
does all the hiring, being the King and all, so be sure to ask for him.
And if you see Lisa Marie poking around asking questions, we'll have to
reschedule. Elvis doesn't want to see her after that Michael Jackson
fiasco.

Jim in Colorado - wink, wink.
