NAME GOES ON LIST EVEN THOUGHT INNOCENT: "The Who"
guitarist Pete Townshend was arrested and charged with
possessing pornographic images of children. He says he
was "doing research" for his autobiography when he
accessed a web site containing images of child sexual
abuse. But they found that he did not have any such
images and had not downloaded any from the web site he
was visiting. They got onto him because a credit card
number was required to even get on the site. His
arrest in January was part of "Operation Ore," an
FBI-led crackdown on Internet child pornography. The
cops say it is "not a defense to access these images
for research or out of curiosity." Then how do news
people investigate such things? How do government
agents investigate if any accessing is a crime? Are
government agents committing a crime when they do it?

In any case, it was found that he did not have any
such images on his computer or in his house. That he
had not downloaded any images from the site. So the
charges against him were dropped. But guess what? His
name, which was placed on a national register of sex
offenders without a conviction for anything, will stay
there even though he has been shown to be innocent of
a crime. It will stay there because he simply accessed
such a site, for whatever reason. That's not a crime,
but his name will remain on a list of people "guilty"
of sex crimes even though he is not guilty of a sex
crime. Doesn't that discredit such lists? It does to
me.
