Deal could end Pete's legal matter

Rock legend Pete Townshend might avoid prosecution in
connection with suspicion that he downloaded kiddie
porn.

The Who guitarist and songwriter, under investigation
as part of a crackdown on child pornography in Great
Britain, was arrested Jan. 13 at his home in southwest
London after admitting he paid to access a child
pornography site. British police carted off computer
disks, envelopes and Polaroid film from his home.

Now, according to London's Daily Mail, the 60-year-old
icon may be offered a plea deal that would leave him
with a record but allow him to avoid a court battle
and up to five years in jail.

Townshend was arrested under Britain's Protection of
Children Act "on suspicion of possessing indecent
images of children, suspicion of making indecent
images of children and on suspicion of incitement to
distribute indecent images of children."

But a rep for Scotland Yard told us, "It's too early
to say" what police are planning and added that a
decision about whether further legal action is
required would be made later this month.

The British tabloid also reports that unless police
make new discoveries on Townshend's computers it is
"highly unlikely" he'll be prosecuted on formal
charges.

Townshend remains positive, writing on his Web site,
"I hope that the police will make their decision very
soon, so that after that I can communicate with you
again more fully."
