Child porn names leaked Jan 27 2003
By Jonathan Walker, Birmingham Post

More than 30 people from Birmingham have been named on
the list of paedophiles who used a US child
pornography website.

The same investigation which led to the arrest of Who
guitarist Pete Townshend has identified 32 people in
Birmingham who used their credit cards to pay for
graphic pictures of children being abused.

The list includes another nine from Coventry, seven
from Telford and six from Worcester.

It was compiled by the US Postal Inspection Service
and contains 7,272 names, said to include senior
figures from the worlds of business, entertainment,
academia and the media.

Yesterday's report is certain to prompt a police
inquiry into how the 1,000 page document came to be
leaked.

Around two-thirds of the addresses on the list appear
to come from London and the South East.

Only a handful of the children featured on the sites,
with names such as Child Rape, have yet been
identified. They include an eight-year-old girl and
her six-year-old brother from Manchester, who police
belief were abused by their step-father and
photographed.

The US inquiry began three years ago and forces across
Britain have spent seven months working through the
names of those in their area. So far 1,200 have been
arrested.

Suspects have been divided into three groups, with the
highest priority given to those who had access to
children, a previous conviction, or who were on the
sex offenders' list.

The second category covered those in a position of
official authority. The third and largest group covers
those who are not regarded as posing a direct risk to
children.

Police have hardly begun approaching those in category
three, which contain 6,000 people.

The Texan man behind the child pornography websites,
Thomas Reedy, was jailed last year for 1,335 years.
Credit card details used to access material gave
police direct leads on 250,000 people worldwide.

According to the report published yesterday, the list
includes:

**The former chairman of one of the City's biggest
firms of stockbrokers

**A senior director of a well-known drinks company.

**A millionaire business colleague of one of Britain's
best-known entrepreneurs

**A director of one of the country's biggest
construction companies

** A prominent City PR man who acts as an intermediary
between boardrooms, the media and the government

**A former director of one of the world's biggest
pharmaceuticals companies

**A senior partner at a multinational accountancy firm

**A top executive at a large manufacturing company

Others on the list include a senior teacher at an
exclusive girls' public school, services personnel
from at least five military bases, GPs, university
academics and civil servants. Many are married and
respected members of their local communities.
